Stakes Are High At SilverStar Slopestyle with Alma Wiggberg and Ben Thompson Grabbing Gold

Alma Wiggberg and Ben Thompson won SilverStar Slopestyle presented by Signature, the Slopestyle Super League (SSL) Playoff stop that sends the top 3 women and top 7 men to the SSL Finals at Crankworx Mont-Sainte-Anne, alongside pre-qualified riders Shealen Reno, Johanna Nussbaumer, David Godziek, Nicholi Rogatkin, Chance Moore. 

With the best of two runs counting, the day came down to who could land a big first run or find something extra in the second. Both fields delivered: a first Crankworx win for BC local Ben Thompson, and a Mont-Sainte-Anne qualifying spot decided by less than a point.

Alma Wiggberg Wins With Dominance

Alma Wiggberg set the high score early with 84 points. Her first run – including a backflip tuck no-hander into a suicide no-hander to barspin, a backflip one-footed can, a backflip-barspin, and a no-foot can – held up as the best of the day. Lisa-Marie Blanc put herself in second from the get-go, securing Silver. This being her first Crankworx event, Michelle Neuner made the biggest jump of the women’s field, going from 65.50 to 71.75 in Run 2 to move past Zoe Witwicki and take third by 1.75 points, punching her ticket for the SSL Finals.

        Ben Thompson’s First Crankworx Gold

        Ben Thompson scored 86.25 in Run 1 and it held up all through second runs, securing his first Crankworx Gold. Brining an incredibly difficult yet clean run to the course, including a tuck no-hander front flip, 360 double down whip, switch 3 whip, 360 barspin to double downside whip and a 360 windshield wiper, he secured the top spot early. Erik Fedko took second after not improving on his Run 1 score. Young Canadian rider Ayden Siebenaler landed third with 82.25, his best result yet. Both Dane Folpp and Jack Feick, hungry for more, pushed it in their second run but couldn’t land it.

                    SSL Finals Spots Coming Down to the Wire 

                    The last SSL Finals spot on the men’s side wasn’t settled until late. Axel Sparrman (SWE), riding his first-ever FMB Gold event, put down a 75.83 in Run 2 to take 7th and book his spot at Crankworx Mont-Sainte-Anne. That pushed out Kaidan Ingersoll, who’d crashed in Run 1 and come back with a 75.25 in Run 2 – good enough for 7th until Sparrman’s score came in behind him. 

                    Now the field is set for the inaugural Slopestyle Super League Finals at Crankworx Mont-Sainte-Anne (September 5). In a winner-takes-all format, results from earlier in the season don’t carry over, so every athlete gets an equal shot at becoming the first ever Slopestyle Super League Champion.

                    More Racing Ahead

                    Downhill Sunday is next, and Group A Seeding gave a first look at the field. Last year’s winner Mille Johnset topped the women’s field, with Maylei Leaneagh second and Sian A’Hern third. On the men’s side, Luke Meier-Smith put down the fastest time of the day once again, with Tegan Cruz right behind him by just 1.76 seconds. Seth Sherlock and Henry Sherry, both strong at the Specialized Canadian Open DH at Crankworx Whistler last week, seeded third and fourth.

                    Two names stood out beyond the Elite ranks: U19s Tayte Proulx-Royds ran the fastest women’s time of the day, ahead of every female Elite rider, and Mack Manietta, racing U17, posted a time that would have placed him fourth in the Elite men’s field.
