Mountain bike festival ensures all ages get amongst the riding action and meet the stars

ROTORUA, Mar 12, 2015 – The world’s biggest mountain biking festival Crankworx rolls into Rotorua this month, bringing with it the very best riders from around the globe and an opportunity for the mountain bike athletes of tomorrow to take a starring role.

With seesaws and skinnies, berms and rollers, the Kidsworx events are designed to get children and families involved and connected with the Crankworx festival, not just as spectators but as participants says Kidsworx Operations Manager Marcello Ojerio.

“We want to maximise the fun for kids by giving them their own space to play, learn new skills and be inspired by what they see the pros get up to,” Ojerio says.

“It’s not very common to have this sort of access to grounds and athletes at an event of this calibre and we are so excited to be able to offer these opportunities as part of Crankworx Rotorua.”

As well as having their own specially-designed tracks to ride on at the Skyline Gravity Park, kids will have the chance to try the same pump track that will be used by the pros, and can meet the Crankworx legends in the outdoor lounge.

For those kids who aren’t able to bring bikes with them, there will be bikes available to borrow, and all kids will be able to walk away with their very own personalised Kidsworx number plate, stickers and lots of bike bling to ‘pimp their rides’ – either at the festival or when they get home.

Families will be well-catered for at the Kidsworx zone with VIP parking spots for kids’ bikes when they’re not being used and a Kidsworx passport for children to collect all the signatures they please, along with a scavenger hunt to ensure they get the most out of the Crankworx village.

All Kidsworx activities are available as part of ticketed entry to the Crankworx festival.

Crankworx Rotorua runs from March 25-29, 2015. Events include the Oceania Whip-Off Champs, Rotorua Pump Track Challenge presented by RockShox, Mons Royale Dual Speed and Style, Rotorua Downhill presented by iXS, Giant Toa Rotorua Enduro and the Rotorua Slopestyle.

There will also be an expo at the Skyline Gravity Park and a free Bikes and Beats Music Festival, featuring New Zealand’s top artists at the Rotorua Village Green. Stay tuned for details at crankworx.com

If you can’t bring your bike along, collect all the goodies to get the job done when you get home.
Meet the Pros – Hang out under the Redwood trees in the Kidsworx outdoor lounge and meet the legends of Crankworx. Hear their stories, ask questions and get those pimpin’ number plates signed. Going on throughout Crankworx, check the Kidsworx marque for who is droppin’ in and when.
Hipster Mini Downhill (DH) – ONLINE REGISTRATION required – Be a part of the action and take centre stage on Skyline’s most popular trail. Kids up to aged seven to 15 are invited to head to the top of the mountain in the gondola and drop in to the chiselled berms and flow of this Enduro-style DH run, finishing in the heart of the action. Mini-shredders (aged 7 – 9) will need to be accompanied by a parent for this participatory fun event. Numbers are limited. Check crankworx.com/rotorua for registration details from 16 March.
Pump Track Skills Sessions and Pump Track Challenge – REGISTRATION required – Not just any pump track, but THE pump track. The bumps, berms and rollers of the Crankworx pump track await mini-shredders for these exciting practice sessions and competition. Age-specific practice sessions will be available for kids aged seven to 15 to have a go. The action will heat up during the head-to-head competition when the winner of each round will advance to the next until the final victor earns the title of Kidsworx Pump Track Champion. Registration is required for the sessions and the competition and can be completed at the Kidsworx site on Saturday 28 March from 10am. Numbers are limited.
Tiki Tour Scavenger Hunt – Grab a biking buddy and explore the Crankworx venue hunting for clues at specific locations sending you on an adventure around the Crankworx village – you’ll be ready to be a tour guide when you finish! Bring your completed Tiki Tour card to the Kidsworx Marquee to see if you’ve won a prize. New Tiki Tour maps will be available each day.
Kidsworx Tamariki track – Just for kids, the Tamariki track winds around the perimeter of the Kidszone. With berms and rollers this track is open throughout Crankworx for kids to get their flow on.
