Chaney ‘Gounette’ Guennet, took Crankworx Les Gets by storm in 2016, coming out of relative obscurity to claim the top spot on the podium in the Crankworx Les Gets Pump Track Challenge presented by RockShox. His overall bike racing history started much earlier – at five-years-old he started riding BMX, entering and winning his first competition the same year. Fast-forward to 2015, he had a near podium miss at his first Crankworx appearance in Les 2 Alpes, an experience he describes as “amazing,” racing alongside the world’s best riders.

Where were you born?
I was born in Châteauroux, in the Center of France.

Where’s home for you now?
It’s still my hometown.

What first got you in to mountain biking?
I tried mountain bike in 2010 for the first time on a 4X national cup. It was cool experience, but short because I finished 3rd on a first race.. The year after, I rode on 4X National Championship and I finished second. It’s unforgettable for a kid who simple won some BMX regional cup !

Where’s your favourite place to ride?
Sure Whistler is absolutely amazing for mountain biking, but I love Spain. Always sunny, lot of spots for every discipline and every one are cool !

When did you decide this is something you wanted to do professionally?
I have to work next to my training. I’m not a professional rider, I can’t ride every day, or often in a week. I’m a BMX coach and Pumptrack/BMX Race track builder, it’s my second passion. For me, it’s really important to have the both side.

Describe your first Crankworx experience.
We must go back in 2014 in Les 2 Alpes. First experience in Crankworx Tour, in Pumptrack. J. Wichmann killed me on a semi ! I finished 4th on the final, it’s was so nice for me! As a consequence of that, I decided to ride the following year and I won in Les Gets (in Pumptrack too).

What would you say has been your biggest accomplishment to date?
For sure 2018 was the biggest year for me. After a complete Crankworx Tour, one victory and two second place, I won the Pumptrack World Championship. It was my first experience in N-Z, one of the most beautiful country I ever seen, with really nice people ! Innsbruck and Whistler get always perfect track ! Only one bad memory was in France, first time for me I finished early on the race in France.

What’s been your favourite Crankworx memory so far?
My best memory it’s my final against Barry Nobles in Les Gets! Barry is a BMX Legend, I ride BMX since i am a kid and Barry still one of the most stylish bmx racer. When you arrived in final against him, it’s really impressive !

Do you have any projects on the go or any goals you’re working towards?
For 2019, I would like to try different discipline of the Crankworx Tour. I would like to be on the top 8 in the Dual Slalom, I love the format of racing ! And I want to discover the Air DH format. Impressive speed, hard race with lot of jumps!

Beyond bikes, what other things are you in to?
Beyond bikes, spend time with friends and family it’s really important for me. Love spend time on beautiful road with car and friends too, or doing sport with us ! Simple thing are the best !
