With a career that kicked off in BMX at three-years-old, Barry ‘Alabama Slammer’ Nobles has grown into a serious competitor in the Crankworx and mountain biking worlds. From his first competition at 11, he made his way to Crankworx Whistler in 2013, an experience he says was a game changer: “I’ve followed Crankworx since I was a kid but never was able to go. Loved every moment and don’t plan to miss any for a long time!”
Where were you born?
Born in a little town of Wetumpka, Alabama
Where’s home for you now?
I’m currently living in sunny Southern California
What first got you in to mountain biking?
Growing up riding Bmx in Alabama, it was hard to get on a MTB but I always made it to a 4x or dual slalom race at least once a year since I was about 15. The passion was there but no access. Moving to California is when I really started transitioning
Where’s your favourite place to ride?
Number 1 would have to be my back yard #SopranoSpot. As far as a good mtb pedal I’m lucky enough to live near an amazing spot with a lot of big name dudes to ride with.
When did you decide this is something you wanted to do professionally?
I knew riding a Bicycles as a profession was a goal since I was young. 2 wheels is all my life revolves around.
Describe your first Crankworx experience.
My first Crankworx was 2013 and it was amazing. 3rd in speed n style. 2nd in dual slalom. And 1st in pump track. I walked a way with a pocket full of cash and 1 point from the “king of Crankworx” that’s when I became hooked for more.
What would you say has been your biggest accomplishment to date?
My biggest accomplishment is hard to say. I have national titles in BMX and MTB, Podiums from multiple disciplines, but I’d have to say winning pump track years ago with my now wife Caroline Buchanan was a pretty rad memory.
What’s been your favourite Crankworx memory so far?
Beat Crankworx memory would be the last question. Standing on the top step with Caroline.
Do you have any projects on the go or any goals you’re working towards?
Few projects and goals I’ve set for my self. Long term and short but you’ll have to keep following my journey to see those! Haha
Beyond bikes, what other things are you in to?
Besides pedaling a bike, I’m a big Harley guy. Whether it’s long ride, racing flat track, or just wrenching on them with my Craftsman tools. I have a art side as well so I try to get creative with hands on projects.
