Volunteer FAQDO I NEED A BIKE TO VOLUNTEER?
No. Bikes are only an asset for the Sports Crew if you are an intermediate to advanced rider and only if the event takes place up the mountain in the Whistler Blackcomb Bike Park. Events in the Boneyard do not require bikes.
HOW DOES THE VOLUNTEER APPLICATION PROCESS WORK?
Fill out the registration form online. The volunteer manager will receive your form and make note of your details and requests. A preliminary schedule will be made and emailed out to you. Please ensure you are checking your junk mail as our email address can be blocked by some security settings.
WHEN SHOULD I EXPECT TO SEE MY SCHEDULE FOR THE EVENT?
The volunteer manager will create the preliminary schedule approximately 3 weeks prior to Crankworx (mid July). Anyone who has registered before this date will be included in this schedule. If you register to volunteer after this date, your schedule should be sent to you within approximately 48-72 hours. If you have not received a schedule based on the timeline mentioned here and feel that you should have, please email the volunteer manager at firstname.lastname@example.org
WHERE DO I CHECK IN FOR MY FIRST SHIFT?
The event office is located at the Aava Hotel, 4005 Whistler Way, Whistler BC, V0N1B4 1 (800) 663 5644. Once in the lobby, our offices are located to the right. Please arrive 15 minutes prior to the start time indicated on your schedule to allow time to fill out the appropriate paperwork and get to your shifts location.
WHAT SHOULD I BRING TO MY VOLUNTEER SHIFT?
We suggest that you consult the weather forecast ahead of time and dress appropriately for the weather conditions. Wear comfortable shoes to ALL shifts (indoors or outdoors). It’s also handy to carry a backpack with the following: hat, sunscreen, water, snacks, camera, sweater (weather can change drastically throughout the day), and an umbrella (can be used in sunny weather to create shade or rainy weather to keep that pesky rain away).
HOW LONG ARE THE SHIFTS?
The volunteer shifts range anywhere from 2.5-8 hours in length. You’ll receive a schedule approximately 3 weeks prior to the event confirming your shift lengths as well as the area you’re assigned to.
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT AREAS I CAN VOLUNTEER FOR?
Sport Operations, Production, Expo, Event Office, Whistler Olympic Plaza, Timing (must be available for whole festival) and Branding (must be physically fit).
WILL I BE OUTSIDE ALL DAY?
Depending on where you are assigned, you may be indoors or outdoors. Even if you’re signed up for an indoor shift, please be prepared to be outdoors as sometimes your responsibilities will require you to work outside.
WILL THERE BE A LUNCH PROVIDED FOR ME?
If you are volunteering for the Sports Crew or any shift over 4 hours in length, you will be provided with a bagged lunch each day but all other shift are responsible for their own food and snacks.
CAN I VOLUNTEER IF I’M UNDER 19?
Yes. The minimum age to volunteer is 16. If you are under 18, you need to submit a waiver signed by a parent or guardian before or at your first shift. You can print off the waiver ahead of time HERE.
IS THERE FREE ACCOMMODATION PROVIDED FOR VOLUNTEERS?
We do not provide accommodation for volunteers.
WHERE CAN I PARK WHILE I’M VOLUNTEERING?
Pay parking is available in day lots 1,2,& 3. Free parking in lots 4,5,6,7 & 8. We highly suggest taking public transit (more information at www.transitbc.com/regions/whi ) or riding your bike if possible as the lots fill up quickly.
ARE THERE ANY PERKS FOR VOLUNTEERING?
No…Of course there are!!
Each volunteer will receive a free Crankworx t-shirt. For each 12 hours volunteered, you’ll receive a Whistler Blackcomb Bike Park voucher valid until the end of the season. There will also be a wrap up party for all volunteers to take place the last day of the festival. Location and time TBD. Not to mention the great times you’ll have being a part of a fantastic festival along with meeting some of the coolest people around!
